The Co-Founders Notebook - It’s where you’re aiming that determines success

After 8 years of the golf clubs gathering dust in the garage, it was time for them to see the light of day again.

A friend of mine has invited me out for a round of golf, mainly to get us out of shopping with our partners. And to be honest, chasing a little white ball around a field appeals to me more that walking aimlessly around a shopping centre.

The clubs were cleaned, bag emptied of the leftovers from my last round (no perishable goods, thankfully!) and I thought I’d hit the driving range to make sure I can still hit a ball.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t expect to rock up and strike the ball like Tiger Woods, but I thought I’d be able to hit at least one ball straight. Right. Left. Right. Every which way but straight. So after a while of covering every inch of the driving range, I took a step back and remembered an old friend, Bobby.

Bobby was 70+ years old at the time. Really nice guy. Great to play with, a nightmare to play against. Why? Consistency. He wasn’t a flamboyant player by any stretch, he just consistently hit the ball straight. Kept the ball in play. Scored on every hole.

So this weekend, as I stand on that first tee, I’m going to channel my inner “Bobby”.

In business, as in golf, it’s not how fast you swing or how far you hit the ball - it’s where you’re aiming that determines success.

Until next time,
