The Co-Founders Notebook - How to find a good bookkeeper
If I was given a Bitcoin for every time I was asked this question, I’d be richer than Elon (at the time of writing anyway!) and it’s an answer that can differ depending on who you ask.
I’ve always said “a good bookkeeper is worth their weight in gold” because I’ve seen first hand what happens to businesses that aren’t on top of their finances, and it’s rarely a positive outcome.
But finding the “one” is easier said then done. You think you’ve found them, but sometimes by the time you realise they can’t deliver, it’s too late.
If I wasn’t running an accountancy firm, and had very little experience in this sector, one of the key things I would be looking at is experience. That’s not saying they need 20+ years working as a self-employed bookkeeper, it’s looking at what areas they have worked in, whether that be for a few years or a lifetime.
A bookkeeper that has experience on both sides of the coin, that’s in practice and industry, I find delivers better results. They’ve seen what is important internally and understand the accounting and tax implications externally.
Now, I might be bias here as this is the route I took. Working for a couple of practices before climbing the corporate ladder up to Finance Director of a medium sized business. I’ve seen it from all sides.
So, when looking for your new bookkeeper, just remember, a great bookkeeper doesn’t just balance your books, they steady your vision, fuel your momentum, and free you to build the future you imagine!
Until next time,
